In the clinic, the gum is isolated before application, the concentration is adapted to your level of sensitivity, and the teeth are checked beforehand for decay and cracks. A strong gel applied over decay or a receding gum causes real pain and, sometimes, damage.

Sensitivity to cold is the most common side effect and, when it occurs, usually passes within 24-48 hours. We reduce it with desensitising gels applied before and after the session and, if needed, by shortening the gel's contact time.

Artificial materials do not respond to whitening gel. Veneers, crowns, composite fillings and implant restorations stay exactly the shade they were made in, while the natural teeth around them become lighter. The difference becomes visible and, sometimes, bothersome.
That is why the correct order is: we whiten the natural teeth first, wait for the colour to stabilise, and only then choose the shade of the prosthetic restorations. If you already have veneers or crowns on your front teeth, we discuss whether whitening makes sense or whether the solution is to replace them.
Not all natural stains respond equally either. Yellowish discolouration lightens well, greyish discolouration less easily, and white spots from fluorosis or hypomineralisation may temporarily become more noticeable before they fade.

In the long term, maintenance means professional cleaning every 6 months and, if you have the home kit, a short touch-up session once a year. This costs much less than repeating a full whitening.
Whitening is not carried out during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in children and adolescents under 18, in the presence of active decay or untreated periodontal disease, in patients with significant gum recession, heavily eroded enamel or cracked teeth, or in cases of known allergy to peroxide.
Pre-existing tooth sensitivity is not an absolute contraindication, but it changes the protocol: we start with low concentrations, use desensitisers and usually choose the at-home tray option instead of the in-clinic session.
