Prosthetic dentistry — ceramic crowns and a shade guide, at Smile by Ada

From a single veneer to full-mouth rehabilitation, the prosthetic plan starts with an intraoral scan and a digital mock-up. The patient sees the result before treatment begins.

The materials used (monolithic zirconia, e.max, pressed ceramic) are chosen according to the area of the mouth and the function of the tooth.

Zirconia crowns: when they are the right choice

A zirconia crown fully covers a worn, fractured or root-filled tooth, restoring its shape and strength. The material is a high-strength ceramic with no metal framework, which eliminates the grey line at the gum margin.

It is milled by machine from a single block, based on an intraoral scan. Accuracy no longer depends on a conventional impression, and the fit is checked digitally before the restoration is made.

  • A heavily broken-down tooth, where a filling will no longer hold
  • A non-vital, root-filled tooth, which becomes brittle
  • A fractured or cracked tooth
  • Restorations on several teeth, where a uniform shade is needed
  • A crown on an implant, screw-retained or cemented

Zirconia, EMAX or porcelain fused to metal

No material is better in absolute terms. There is one that suits the area of the mouth being treated and how much aesthetics matter there.

  • Zirconia: the strongest of the three. The usual choice for molars and for restorations spanning several teeth, where chewing forces are high.
  • EMAX, lithium disilicate: translucent, the closest to the appearance of a natural tooth. Suited to front teeth, where aesthetics take priority over raw strength.
  • Porcelain fused to metal: ceramic on a metal framework. The conventional, more affordable solution, but over time it can leave a shadow at the gum margin.

How a crown is made, step by step

  • Consultation and X-ray. We check whether the tooth can take a crown or first needs root canal treatment
  • Tooth preparation and intraoral scan
  • A provisional crown, so you are not left with the prepared tooth exposed
  • Milling the restoration and trying it in on the tooth: shape, shade, contact with the neighbouring teeth
  • Final cementation

How long it lasts and what damages it

Long-term studies report high survival rates for single ceramic crowns. What fails most often is not the crown but the tooth underneath it.

  • Decay at the crown margin, where hygiene is superficial
  • Bruxism, or night-time grinding, which cracks the ceramic. It is managed with a protective night guard
  • Untreated periodontal disease, which destroys the bone supporting the tooth
  • Regular check-ups and professional cleaning are what keep the restoration in the mouth

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

Veneers cover only the visible front surface of the tooth (ideal for aesthetics, with minimal preparation), while crowns cover the whole tooth (when its structure is compromised). At the consultation we decide on the right solution for your case.

How long does a zirconia restoration last?

With correct hygiene, monolithic zirconia restorations last for many years and are very durable. We offer an extended warranty on premium prosthetic work.

Can I see the result beforehand?

Yes — with an intraoral scan and a DSD digital mock-up you see a simulation of your final smile before any preparation.

How much does a zirconia crown cost?

The price is shown in the price list below and is the same for all patients. You receive the full plan, with the number of crowns and any preparatory treatment, in writing at the consultation.

Zirconia or EMAX?

Zirconia is stronger and is usually used on molars and on longer-span restorations. EMAX is more translucent and looks more natural on the front teeth. We choose according to the area and how visible the restoration is.

Will it be obvious that it is a crown?

With well-made work, no. Zirconia and EMAX have no metal framework, so there is no grey line at the gum. The shade is matched to your own teeth, and the shape is tried in before cementation.

Is a crown on an implant something different?

The restoration itself is similar, but it is attached to an abutment fitted into the implant rather than to a prepared tooth. Its price is listed separately, and its position is planned together with the implant.
